April: Progress on My Goals for This Year

It seems like my birthday was much longer than only a month ago. (Although I’m still adjusting to remembering my new age. Is it 26? Or 27? Then I turn to Michael in hopes that his memory isn’t fading as fast as mine!)

This means that I’m one month into my list of 27 things to do while I’m 27.

I’d like to periodically post updates (to help keep me accountable) about how I’m faring with this little list of mine. So far, here’s what I’ve got to show for myself:

#1. Go Camping.
Update: For my birthday, Michael took me to Savannah where we pitched a tent, tended a fire and camped out the first night. Read more about our trip here and see photos here.

#7. Memorize more Scripture.
Update: My blog friend Frugal Trenches invited me to join a Scripture-memorization club, and so far have added these verses to my repertoire (ahem, from memory): “Anyone who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins.” (James 4:17) “This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome.” (1 John 5:3) And then one I memorized on my own: “One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.” (Ps. 27:4) Slowly but surely!

#8. Do something with the blank wall in my kitchen.
Update: I posted a visual of my impromptu solution for the sad empty wall in our kitchen. The answer was a string of greeting cards from friends and family along with a couple super-cute hand-drawn portraits by some of the little kids in our lives!

#12. Go thrift shopping / antiquing.
Update: Michael and I stopped by a church rummage sale where we picked up a huge coffee table book from the 70s that’s a collection of illustrations from top designers of the time depicting famous quotes by some of history’s great thinkers and leaders on subjects like freedom, politics, human behavior, etc. I think whenever Michael gets a teaching job, it would be really cool to frame some of these images and display around his classroom!

#20. Use my crock pot more.
Update: Well, I took some baked beans to a potluck and used my crock pot for that. Does that count?!

#25. Stop picking my cuticles.
Update: I’ve never loved this dirty little habit of mine, but now that it’s down on paper and an intentional goal, I’ve really buckled down, thanks to a little cuticle oil stick I keep in my purse, similar to this one. A lot of time I end up picking my cuticles (and my lips!) because I’m nervous or anxious or bored, so I’m trying to be more aware of that, kind of like how people have to be with emotional eating.

  1. you are doing well! A boy that lives in my house who shall remain un-named also picks at his lips. Let me know if you have any products that can help with that one!

  2. Haha! I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with that little quirk! So far the only remedy has been having heavy-duty chapstick with me at all times or vaseline nearby. I also put vaseline on my cuticles at night to help with that, too.

Good for you Carmen! You are very brave. I have often thought I might be more accountable to the goals I have set if I made them known to others....but I'm not brave enough! You do give me inspiration though and maybe I'll get there someday!

  4. Oh, thanks, Jenni! That means a lot because you are an inspiration in so many ways for me! Although I don't know that I would classify it as bravery so much as motivation :) Hopefully this will help keep it going throughout the rest of the year!

  5. I love the not-picking-cuticles one! Every Sunday during church, I get this look of disapproval from Tim because I am a NAIL PICKER and it is terrible! Pick, pick, pick! Well, mine are looking MUCH better...my motivation is a manicure when all ten digits are deemed "long enough." I have found that for me, lotion, lotion, lotion and clear nail polish works wonders. If they don't look pretty then I don't really care about trying to get them to the "pretty point" you know? I find I pick a lot in the car...in traffic, at lights, etc. Nervous energy I guess. I am thinking about getting some of those blank circular stickers and putting them on some kind of surface....paper or an overhead transparency or something...when I want to pick, I will just pick at the stickers...? Best of luck, friend! :) Love you!

  6. Ah! I know that "look of disapproval" all too well myself!! I never thought about picking a sticker instead. If I can't break the habit on my own, I'll have to try that!
