Well friends, Michael and I have joined the club, specifically the Netflix club.
I've never been all that into movies, but it is nice to get to settle down with a good movie, wind down for the evening with a little "happily ever after" tale (or something like that.)
The next step? Fill up our queue. Which has proven harder than I'd thought, mostly because the recommendations they give on there aren't all that helpful. And also because I'm kind of picky when it comes to what I'm going to watch: I don't enjoy anything that's too raunchy or too violent. (Michael and I were watching 24 and the sound of hearing necks break made my stomach lurch, so that stint is now over.)
Curious whether you might want to offer some suggestions in that vein. What movies have you seen lately that you'd give a hearty recommendation to?
To get a taste of what I mean, some of the movies I've seen lately that I enjoyed include: The Songcatcher (takes place in Appalachia during the Victorian era and is filled with awesome folk music), Coraline (beautiful little "cartoon"), Therese (looks at the life of Saint Therese, who Mother Theresa took her name after), The Prize Winner of Defiance Ohio (set in the 1950s, tells the story of how a mom provided for her family by entering jingle-writing contests, and is based on a true story!) and Star Trek (seriously).

Carmen- we LOVE Netflix! I think you will be glad you joined!!! We have the membership where you get 2 movies at once. We started out with one, but if we forgot to put it in the mail or it was a holiday or long weekend...we spent days thinking about how we are paying money for "nothing." Now, we constantly have movies coming in/out and we have it set up so every other one is a chick flick/action one to make it more fair. I have learned a lot about Instant Watch and like it much better than when we first joined. Here are my suggestions. Some of them are a little outlandish ((ahem, the Disney Shows)) but I am trying to broaden my horizons!!! :)

We are still awaiting Pilgrim's Progess! Until it is released, I have to settle for the cartoon version of the John Buntyn classic that my son is watching as a homeschool assignment :)

We used to love watching tv shows through the service since 2 hours seems like a lot of time some nights and we didn't want to spend TOO much time in front of the tv. Some of our favorites are:

Arrested Development
Veronica Mars, Buffy the Vampire Slayer & Gilmore Girls (these were my faves, but Andy tolerated them cause they have "smart writing")
Flight of the Conchords (I think you'll like this a lot)
Freaks & Geeks
Mad Men
There are some others I'd recommend, but they might be too far into the "violent" camp (The Wire, The Sopranos, Dexter).
Okay, and here are the last few good movies we saw before we canceled our service:
Young @ Heart (awesome documentary about a senior citizens rock n' roll choir)
Once (love this music-based movie)

and more recent releases, we just saw Inglorious bastards and I loved it. But I love Tarantino movies. If you don't like violence at all, you probably won't like it. But I'm kind of a guy that way.
These are great recommendations! I also like your suggestion, Holly, about alternating movies so that there's a fair share for both of us. I mentioned that one to Michael :)
ReplyDeleteI also went through Amazon looking for movies but found out that all the ones I discovered hadn't even been released. But "Where the Wild Things Are" is at the top of my list when it does come out!
Right now we've got all the "Planet Earth" DVDs lined up. I'm going to have to start researching all these other ideas!!! This is great! I knew you guys would be a great help!

ReplyDelete"Happy Go Lucky" I really think you will love it. "500 Days of Summer" was also really nice.
I can't deal with sad, violent movies either. Even if they are "good" films, I just can't deal with them. Examples of this include "Children of Men" and "District Nine." Couldn't deal.
Oh, I haven't heard of Happy Go Lucky yet! I'm going to look that up on Amazon right now. Thanks so much! And I'm glad I'm not the only one who is a wimp when it comes to sad and/or violent movies!
