Learning More About Cloth Diapering and Reusable Cloth Wipes; Plus a Giveaway!

I grew up in a household watching my mom safety-pin cloth diapers onto my siblings. Picking through the laundry, those quilted white squares of cloth were just a normal part of our routine. There are plenty of pictures of us where we can be seen crawling around in nothing more than a little white diaper during the dog-days of summer.

Growing up with it as the norm, I always intended to cloth diaper when I had my own children, thanks to both the economic and environmental benefits that came with it. In spite of that, I hadn’t ever given much thought to the idea of what to use to clean up after all those diaper changes. You just use wipes, right?

Well, now that I’m actually in the process of preparing for this little baby of ours, a whole new world has opened up as I’ve been researching everything from diaper bags to cloth diapering. One of the things I discovered is that many parents who chose to cloth-diaper their children also use reusable, cloth wipes. That was brand new to me.

So when the company Blueberry offered to send me some samples of their cloth wipes, I was really interested to see what these were all about. I’d read online about some parents making their own wipes from flannel receiving blankets they’d cut into squares, so I didn’t really know what to expect.

The sets I received from Blueberry, however, are a far cry from a cut-up receiving blanket. If that’s what you are thinking, too, then expect to be impressed. These things are luxurious. They feel like velvet against your skin, which I should know, because I couldn’t stop rubbing them against my cheek they were so soft.

I received a six-pack of their cotton wipes (which come in a variety of colors; I received the purple ones). On the front, the cloths are made of a cotton velour, and they are backed with soft Sherpa, which I imagine will be useful for more heavy-duty cleaning.

Here's a look at the cotton wipes I received:

And here's a close-up shot of both sides of the wipe:

I also received a six-pack of their bamboo and organic cotton wipes, which come in a standard “natural” hue. It’s almost difficult to tell the two sides of these cloths apart, although one side has more of a terry-cloth feel.

Here's a closer look at the bamboo wipes:

And here's a close-up shot of both sides:

The cloths are a rectangular shape, so that they can fit into a standard wipe case, if you like. Plus, they’re quite thick and double-sided, so I expect that you’ll be able to get more use out of each individual cloth than any store-bought disposable. For that reason, the company suggests that you keep at least 24 wipes on hand. Not bad at all!

And, Blueberry is generously sponsoring a giveaway for one Life Blessons reader to also receive one set of both their cotton wipes and bamboo wipes, so that you can try the wipes out for yourself!

ENTER TO WIN TWO SETS OF REUSABLE CLOTH BABY WIPES

To enter to win two sets of reusable cloth baby wipes from Blueberry, please visit their website and then, in one comment, tell me what other products of theirs would you want to try or what other color of wipes (aside from the natural or purple ones that I received) that you like best.

Enter to win by 11:59pm EST on Monday, October 15, and please make sure that I have a way to contact you in case you are selected as the winner. (Winners must be 18+ and live in the USA.)

The Latest from Vanity Fair, Plus a $100 Giveaway

This a sponsored review from BlogHer and Vanity Fair®

In July I got the chance to partner with Lily of France to show off some bras they’d sent me and share some of my professional dress tips for those who work in the creative industry.

Lily of France’s parent company, Fruit of the Loom, was so pleased with the response you guys had to that post that they wanted to pair up again to show off some more of their latest products, this time from their Vanity Fair® brand.

First off, they've released a new Modern Coverage line of bras, which means that they’re cut and shaped a little differently from the traditional bras. The whole purpose behind these bras is that they’re as invisible under your clothes as possible (which you’ll remember is a biggie for me!). So, they’re cut a little skinnier so that there’s less chance that your bra might peek out from beneath a V-neck top, for instance. And they’re made out of a really smooth material that skims over your body so that it won’t pucker beneath even the lightest weight blouse.

Each of the three bras in this new line are a little different: The Vanity Fair® Advanced Support Underwire Bra (pictured above, top left) counts as my favorite because the entire thing—even down to the straps—is constructed of a super silky material that makes it uber comfortable, the perfect everyday bra that you can easily wear all day long. The Vanity Fair® Look Lifted Underwire Bra (pictured above, top right) has some lace detailing on the band and a couple of tiny rhinestones on the front that jazz it up. And the Vanity Fair® Front Close Underwire Bra has the clasp in the front, so that if you don’t want the hooks in the back to show, you’re set.

Vanity Fair also sent me a trio of panties from their Illumination® line, which features a silky and super-comfortable material that makes panty lines unlikely. The underwear comes in a variety of cuts, depending on your needs, including Illumination® Hipster (a full coverage pair that is my favorite of the bunch), Illumination® String Bikini (fashioned so it won’t ride up on you), and Illumination® Hi-Cut (which sits higher on your waist with a comfortable elastic band, making it a pair that I imagine will come in quite handy as I continue on in my pregnancy!).

Plus, like last time, they want to give one reader the chance to win a $100 Visa gift card, which you can put to use picking up some of these new bras and panties or for anything else that strikes your fancy!

My Rules for What to Wear to Work as a Creative (Plus, a Chance to Win $100 from Lily of France)

As a professional writer, there are a few rules I try to live by in the workplace. The first is that when it comes to my writing, I strive to be invisible. What I mean is that when you read what I write, I want to disappear so that all you pay attention to is the story, the emotions, the characters—not to me. You notice the writer when clunky phrasing or awkward word choices or grammatical gaffes crop up. Instead of focusing on the prose, you end up trying to figure out what the writer was intending to do there—and like the curtain being pulled back on the wizard of Oz, the magic of the moment is shattered.

The same thing can be said for dressing for the workplace. There are certain, shall we say, “underpinnings” that ought to work behind the scenes—and stay that way. The foundation of a good outfit is that it ought to call attention to the outfit itself, not what’s going on beneath it. Like that whole invisibility cloak that I talked about when it comes to my writing, I think undergarments ought to play by the same rules.

When I’m wearing an outfit, I want you to notice the outfit, not what’s underneath. That’s why it’s important to choose undergarments that don’t pucker or stick out or show through. Lily of France got in touch with me and sent me a couple bras to try out, and one of my favorite things about these was that they both come with tons of flexibility—straps switch and rearrange so I can get the perfect fit to keep them out of sight while I’m showing off the other parts of the outfit that I intend to show off. (Their Extreme Options bra converts 62+ ways. That's a lot of options!)

The bras are also ultra-comfortable (made with special linings) so you can wear them all day without having to do all that tugging and pulling that can be so common with other bras. Plus, they are smooth and flat so that—even though they come in bright shades and prints—the bras themselves will skim over your skin without puckering. Just make sure to wear dark or heavy clothes over some of the more adventurous colors and prints! (Find out more about Lily of France’s latest bras on theirwebsite.)

Now that we’ve got the basics covered, Lily of France wanted me to take some time to talk about my rules for dressing as a creative in the workplace, specifically about how I’ve learned to meld a professional presentation with just enough panache to showcase my own personality at work. That’s been one of my favorite things about having worked in creative workplaces (namely publishing houses): there’s not only creativity in the work you create between the nine to five of it, but there’s creativity in the way you can present yourself there.

So, here are a couple examples of my favorite work-ready outfits, with Lily of France bras at the base and fun, functional pieces on top that, together, let my creativity shine so I can get back to doing what I do best: being creative.

I am a big believer in figuring out what works best for your body and what you find most comfortable, and then going all out with that. For instance, for most women, workplace wear means high heels. But frankly I don’t like them. So? I don’t wear them. My closet is filled with flats, and I have ones in funky shades that are comfy and coy and suit me to a tee.

I also tend to shy away from high-neck shirts because I find them unflattering for my body type; instead I only buy scoop- or v-neck shirts. Because that’s what looks best on me and makes me feel my best when I’m working 'round the clock. Stick to what works for you, and embrace it!

I love layering, whether it’s adding a scarf or a cardigan. A lot of my wardrobe is filled with solid colors, so even if I don’t mix a print into a given outfit, I can still add interest simply by layering different pieces in a limited range of colors. Figure out what your preferred color palette is and then look for items in those hues. For me, I gravitate toward navy blue, cream, dark brown and jewel-toned colors.

Even at work, I feel like an outfit should have something unexpected, whether it’s a pop of color or a pattern or an accessory that makes it memorable. I tend to prefer understated statement pieces, like the shirt with a graphic bird print on it above (paired with a cute, always-appropriate skirt and flats) or the fun peep-toe flats in the second example. A lot of it simply comes down to experimenting and having fun with what you wear.

Now, Lily of France wants to help you have fun with your wardrobe, too, so they’re sponsoring a giveaway for one Life Blessons reader to receive a $100 Visa gift card.

To enter, visit the Lily of France website and then let me know in a comment which bra appeals most to you. A winner will be randomly chosen and emailed, so please include a way to get in touch with you in your comment.

Sale Shopping at the Grocery Store and a Giveaway to Win a $25 Gift Card to Kroger

If it seems like your neighborhood Kroger is always running a sale, that's because that's pretty much the case! Whenever I'm at a Kroger, I always make sure to browse a few sections of the store to see if there are any surprise mark downs (especially in the Nature's Market section) that weren't advertised that I can snap up. Love those little yellow shelf tags!

Well, it should come as no surprise but for the next few weeks, the Kroger family of stores (including Ralph's, Dillon's and more) is running one of their Cart Buster Savings Events, where tons of products (spanning more than 60 categories of items, including some from Cascadian Farms, Tropicana and Stacy's) will be marked down.

On top of that, though, from today through March 6, they will be featuring Deal of the Day offers, where you'll be able to find savings on a specific item already included in the Cart Buster sale marked down even further—up to and, in some cases, over half off. Each offer will be exclusive and available for one day only. (Find out more about both savings events here.)

Saving Money at the Grocery Store (Plus, a Chance to Win a $25 Kroger Gift Card)

Awhile ago, the Wall Street Journal featured an article about using coupons—advocating it as a serious (and worthwhile) way to save. And the argument was based solely on numbers:

The writer found that the average saving per coupon is $1.44. (Personally I’ve seen very few coupons for that much, but that’s what the research evidently says.) Assuming it takes you a minute to find and clip said coupon, you make $1.44 per minute. Translated into an hourly wage, that’s $86.40.

Okay, now you’ve got my attention.

“Very few of us ever do this kind of math, because we tend to treat low finance differently from high finance, and small sums differently from big ones,” the article states. “And the individual amounts of money may seem small, but they prove the old adage about tiny acorns and mighty oaks. Someone who saves $25 a week will save $100 a month, and $1,200 a year. Over a lifetime that can easily grow to $100,000 or more–even after accounting for inflation.” (Waste not, want not, right?!)

When my husband and I moved to Atlanta and our future financial stability was still unknown (as it was for many months), I started to dip my toes into this world of clipping coupons and shopping grocery sales as a way to save money in case we ever did find ourselves in a situation without income. (Fortunately, that never happened!)

I was impressed by the variety of coupons for high-quality products that could be found—ones for Seventh Generation cleaning supplies or Smart Balance butter, products we were already buying. So even though now that my husband has a stable job and I'm freelancing away, I still make it a point to use coupons and shop sales to get some of the products we would already be buying at significant discounts. Even if we only save $10 a week, that's more than $500 a year!

So how do I do it?

Personally, I don’t buy a weekly newspaper; instead, about once or twice a month, I’ll log onto websites where you can print out your own coupons from home. I especially like to use Swagbucks for printing my coupons, because you earn extra points for every coupon redeemed. If you want to learn more about using Swagbucks, you can read my article with more details here. If you're already using Swagbucks, you can find the Coupons section under the tab that says "Earn." You can also find print-at-home coupons at Coupons.com or Smartsource.com.

Then, usually at the beginning of each week, I'll log on to the websites for the stores I shop at most often and check out their weekly ads and make a note of any good sales I see for products we can use. And if I can use a coupon on top of an already good sale price, all the better.

One sale that's going on right now is at Kroger, where you can get a gallon of milk for free or a $3 credit off your total when you purchase four participating General Mills products. The sale lasts through November 26, and you can find out more about it here. If you routinely buy cereal and milk, this can be a nice way to put a little dent into your grocery budget. Add in some coupons, and you're golden!

Plus, in celebration of their current sale, Kroger is giving away a $25 gift card to one Life Blessons reader to use to really maximize their savings!

Giveaway: Win a Dress from Shabby Apple

Each year, when springtime starts to roll around, I keep my eyes peeled for a dress, what will become my "wedding dress" for that year. You see, once I got old enough to where I was attending a couple of weddings a year, I found myself always running to the mall at the last minute to pick out a "just-right" dress for the occasion.

Finally, I realized that I didn't need a new dress for every wedding but just one dress that I could wear multiple times throughout the season. The biggest thing was that I had to love wearing it; that it didn't feel "old and frumpy" the second time I went to wear it.

A couple of years ago, I found a dress on Shabby Apple that became my go-to "wedding dress" for that year: A soft olive green with cascading ruffles along the top, that I like to dress up with a belt or ribbon around the waist. (Yep, it's the middle one pictured above!) It has a touch of vintage to it that makes it feel timeless, which is why that dress still gets plenty of wear, wedding or not.

Well, today, I'm pleased to let you know that you can have the chance to get your own vintage-inspired dress or skirt from Shabby Apple, thanks to their generous offer to host a giveaway for one Life Blessons reader! And even if you aren't selected as the winner, you can also receive a 10% discount from their site if you enter the code lifeblessons10off at checkout (code good thru 11/7/11).

Win a Shopping Spree for Your Home Bar or Wine Collection! [ CLOSED ]

Having a home that I find beautiful (or at least evolving in that direction) is one a thrill of mine. Especially so when you're able to combine form with function and turn an everyday essential into a work of art. Such is the opportunity when it comes to storing your wine collection: Thanks to some creative wine racks, they have been freed from the closed-doors of the pantry, allowing you to show off your collection of wines chosen for their funky labels (we all do it!).
So when my friendly neighborhood publicist emailed and asked if I'd like to host a giveaway for their website which sells all things bar- and wine-related (from the stools you sit on to wine racks and corkscrews), it was an emphatic 'yes!' on my end.

AllBarStools.com is offering any item of $35 or less to one Life Blessons reader. How do you enter? Pretty easy:

1. Visit AllBarStools.com and find an item of $35 or less that you'd like to win. Please choose wisely because if you're selected as the winner, this will be the item you get! (Here's a direct link to browse my favorite section, their wine racks.)
2. Come back here and comment on this post, including the item of your choice.
3. Make sure you also include your email address somewhere in your comment.

That's it--one comment per person, making sure you follow each step above. The contest is open until 11:59pm EST on February 1. I'll randomly choose the winner, get in touch with them (via the email provided in the comments) and then your prize will be shipped to you directly!

To get you started, here are some of my favorite $35-or-less items from AllBarStools.com that could be yours (click on the photo to go directly to that product page):

Wouldn't these be the perfect props for a romantic at-home Valentine's dinner? Now get shopping!
